3 min read

Welcome back to our Meet the Team series! In Part 3, we’re shining a spotlight on more of the volunteers who help bring The Armstrong to life. From keeping our community connected through marketing and communications, to helping with events, facilities and reception, our volunteers play a vital role in making our venue such a special place.

What is your focus at The Armstrong?

I’m part of the Events team and also help with Marketing, taking care of the more traditional side of things, such as writing for local magazines and the press. I’m also involved with the Facilities team and the Reception crew, so there’s always plenty to keep me busy!

What does The Armstrong mean to you?

I’ve been involved with The Armstrong for a long time through my Thornbury Arts Festival hat in addition to my work on the 2005 Arts & Community in Thornbury (ACT) project [an initiative to build a new theatre and arts complex in Thornbury]. So, when the opportunity came along to join Steve, Jill and their project team on the Armstrong Hall Action Alliance (AHAA) to fight the closure of The Armstrong, I signed up! I love being part of the regeneration of this very special place and helping to secure its future for the community.

Fun Fact

When I was under two years old, I was given the honour of lighting the victory bonfire in our street at the end of the Second World War. I don’t think there were quite so many health and safety rules back then!

What is your focus at The Armstrong?

I help out on the Marketing team, putting together the monthly newsletters that land in your inbox and writing blogs for The Armstrong’s website - including this one!

What does The Armstrong mean to you?

I have been involved in productions at The Armstrong for almost 20 years, since I was in my teens - it has been a huge part of my life! I met my husband whilst helping backstage on a production of Miss Saigon at the venue (where my brother was also playing one of the leads), so it is a very special place to me. I would love for my daughter to have similar access to such a wonderful community venue as she grows up.

Fun Fact

I became so obsessed with Mount Everest that I persuaded my husband to do the Everest Base Camp trek for our honeymoon! After 12 days of trekking through the Himalayas, he’s now in charge of choosing our holiday destinations …

What is your focus at The Armstrong?

My focus is on helping to develop an exciting and varied programme of events that brings the community together through music, theatre, live entertainment and other cultural experiences.

What does The Armstrong mean to you?

The Armstrong holds a very special place in my heart. It was here that my son joined and thrived in the youth theatre group Northavon Youth Theatre Company (NYTC). He performed in six musicals, an experience that helped him grow in confidence and set him on the path to a career in the theatre industry.

Fun Fact

I'm a year-round cold water swimmer - no wetsuit, whatever the weather! Some might say I'm mad, but I call it invigorating!

Keep an eye out for the next instalment of our Meet the Team series, where we’ll be introducing more of the people behind The Armstrong!
